Abstract: Road construction projects are complex endeavours that involve numerous risks that can im[pact the success of the project. Identifying and managing critical risks is essential to ensuring the project meets desirable goals. this study assessed the critical risks in the pre- project, pre-construction, construction and post - construction stages of the road construction projects according to the process protocol approach. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and data were collected using a questionnaire survey from 60purposively selected respondents in two civil engineering construction organisations who have been involved in procuring roads in Nigeria.
