INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY SKILLS ON STUDENTS USE OF LIBRARY RESOURCES IN FEDERAL POLYTECHNICS IN NORTH-EAST, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study investigated Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills on students use of library resources in federal polytechnics in North-east, Nigeria. Three research questions guided the study in line with the research objectives. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The study population comprised one thousand HND students that registered with polytechnic librares in North-east, Nigeria with sample size of 500 HND students. The study employed multi-stage sampling technique to determined the sample size. A structured questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. Data were analysed using frequency counts, percentage and mean with criterion mean of 2.50 benchmark. Findings revealed that the extent of the use of library information resource by students was high; possession of ICT skills had a high influence on students use of library information resources and there is a significant influence of possession of ICT skills on the use of library information resources by students in federal polytechnics in North-east, Nigeria. Based on the findings, the study concluded that majority of the repondents used printed information resource than the electronic resources in federal polytechnics in North-east, Nigeria. The study recommended that the management of the polytechnic libraries in North-east, Nigeria should leverage on the ICT skills possessed by the students to put in place services that would facilitate the use of electronic resources in federal polytechnic libraries studied.
