Strategic Leadership in the Era of AI Redefining Library administration for Digital Sustainability

Abstract

The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into higher education is redefining academic library management and service delivery. This conceptual paper examines how strategic and transformational leadership can ensure digital sustainability amid AI-driven transformation. Drawing on Transformational Leadership Theory and Innovation Diffusion Theory, the study develops a framework linking leadership competencies to AI adoption and institutional resilience. Through a synthesis of recent literature, it identifies four critical dimensions; strategic vision, ethical governance, capacity building and organizational readiness, as central to effective AI integration. Findings suggest that leadership quality determines whether AI enhances innovation and access or amplifies inequities and instability. The paper proposes a leadership-driven model for aligning AI strategies with sustainable library development, emphasizing inclusivity, accountability and long-term stewardship. The study contributes to leadership and technology scholarship by positioning library leaders as pivotal actors in achieving ethical and sustainable digital transformation.
