It involves the use of earthworms to decompose organic matter and convert it into nutrient-rich vermicompost, which can be used as a natural fertilizer and a soil conditioner. Vermicomposting has numerous environmental and agricultural benefits, including reducing waste, enhancing soil fertility, improving plant growth, and reducing chemical fertilizer and pesticide use. Additionally, vermitechnology has been shown to remediate contaminated soils and wastewater, making it a promising solution to environmental cleanup efforts. Poorly managed vermicomposting can lead to issues such as unpleasant odours, pest infestations, and nutrient imbalances. The efficiency of vermitechnology depends on factors such as the availability of feedstock, the suitability of earthworm species, and various infrastructural constraints. Large-scale commercial operations may involve significant costs in terms of infrastructure and technology, making them less accessible to smallholders and communities.
