Title: WHY WE COMMITTED MURDER: VIEWS FROM CONVICTED PRISONERS IN NIGER STATE, NIGERIA
Authors: Usman Isah, Ndashiru A.; Bala Muhammad, Dalhatu
Abstract: ABSTRACT
The killing of a human being by his or her fellow beats rational imagination. It becomes extremely difficult to comprehend the rationale that makes individuals become deliberately responsible for the death of their kind. Murder is a baffling issue that poses a significant threat to humanity and highlights the challenges to civilization and societal development. Its ongoing presence questions the overall health of any society. This paper examines the reasons murderers in prisons provide for their actions, using strain and social disorganization theories as a framework. Semi-structured questionnaires were given to 615 convicted violent offenders in four Niger State prisons, selected through a multi-stage sampling technique. Additionally, sixteen prison warders were interviewed for further insights. The findings indicate that low income (P=.934) was not statistically significant at the (P=0.05) level of significance for the explanation of murder unless redolent with peer pressure (p=0.02). Special loan packages and partnerships for and between members of the community are suggested to be instituted and encouraged to reduce the pangs of hard economic situations and lack of social capital, which are also potent factors for the explanation of murder.

Title: FLEXIBLE SKILLS FOR CRIME MANAGEMENT AND HOME SECURITY: A STUDY OF POLICING STRATEGIES IN NIGERIA
Abstract: ABSTRACT
Original Research Articles This study explores flexible skills for crime management and home security, with a specific focus on evaluating contemporary policing strategies in Nigeria. Within the context of growing insecurity and dynamic crime patterns, there is an urgent need to evaluate how the adaptability of diverse flexible skills by law enforcement personnel may help ensure a minimal crime rate and domestic safety in Nigeria. The investigation employs a mixed-methods design, combining questionnaires with interviews involving 420 participants, comprising police officers, security experts, and the public. The study triangulated theoretically, drawing on community policing and routine activities theories. Data was presented in tables and frequencies and subjected to statistical analysis with SPSS. Results revealed orthodox policing techniques are generally weak in tackling contemporary criminality and insecurity. The paper advocated for the integration of flexible skills such as situational adaptability, receptivity to change, problem solving, teamwork, resilience, responsiveness, and resourcefulness into law enforcement training programs to enhance policing strategies for effective crime management and home security.

Title: EFFECTS OF FARMERS-HERDERS CONFLICT ON THE AGRICULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY IN NIGER STATE, NIGERIA
Authors: Usman Isah, Ndashiru A.; Muhammad Abubakar, Giwa; Nur Hafizah, Yusoff
Abstract: ABSTRACT
The persistent farmers-herders conflict in the Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State has caused serious disruptions to agricultural activities and rural livelihoods. This paper investigates the impact of the conflict on food production, land use, and the overall sustainability of the agricultural industry in the region. The frequent clashes between farmers and herders have led to the destruction of farmland, reduced crop yields, displacement of rural populations, and increased tension among communities. These conflicts threaten not only local food security but also the socioeconomic development of the area. The paper sets out to identify and analyze the key effects of the farmers-herders conflict in the Rafi Local Government Area. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, utilizing structured questionnaires and oral interviews to gather data from affected farmers, herders, and relevant local stakeholders. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed to interpret the data and understand the depth of the conflict's impact on agriculture. Findings revealed that the ongoing conflict has significantly undermined agricultural productivity, disrupted economic activities, and created an atmosphere of insecurity. The paper suggests the urgent need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms and the implementation of sustainable land use and resource management policies. These are critical steps toward restoring peace and agricultural stability in the region.
