The Basics of Communication, Writing and Research

Title: The Basics of Communication, Writing and Research
Authors: CHIKE-OKOLI, CHIBUOGWU FELICIA
Abstract: Language in Communication
Language has been described as a vehicle of thought. It is almost the only means of communicating thoughts and feelings available to man. There are other means of course, like the paralinguistic form (signs and symbols). Even so, in its spoken and written forms, language remains by far the commonest means of communication. By definition, language can be said to be a method by which a person expresses his thoughts and feelings in such a way that they can be understood by others. The essence of language is to convey messages. Linguistic studies have discovered that the emergence and development of language has contributed more than any other factor in bridging the wide silence that would have characterized the existence of the early man. It still plays the same role today. It is the sole and life-blood of communication.
Without the emergence and use of language, there can be no communication at all, whether written or oral. Life, Itself, would have been paralyzed. For business purpose of every kind or for individual purpose, efficiency is liable to turn from time to time on communication in speech and writing. Language as a means of communication cannot be eliminated. Rather, the need for higher standards of clear, precise and purposeful expression grows constantly with the increasing complexity of life and society.

Alternative Sources of Instructional Materials for Effective Teaching and Learning: A book of Reading in Instructional Pedagogy.

Title: Alternative Sources of Instructional Materials for Effective Teaching and Learning: A book of Reading in Instructional Pedagogy.
Authors: Chike-Okoli, C. F.; Tafida, A. G.
Abstract: In almost every instructional process, there appears to be an innovative need of instructional materials. The main purpose of every instruction is to bring about a permanent change in the behaviour of learners in a desired direction. The conventional instructional process where the teacher is the sole source of knowledge does not help to give learners the desired knowledge. The changes brought about by technological innovations which are directly and indirectly influencing and changing the way people learn and also redefining literacy have made a case for supporting instruction with materials that can influence learning positively. In a conventional teaching and learning situation, which often lacks motivation, it is difficult to achieve effective transfer of knowledge by teacher.

INTEGRATING ICT INTO ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING: THE PERCEPTION OF ESL STUDENTS IN IBADAN METROPOLIS

Title: INTEGRATING ICT INTO ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING: THE PERCEPTION OF ESL STUDENTS IN IBADAN METROPOLIS
Authors: Isaac, N. O; Chibuogwu, F.C.
Abstract: English language has been described as the most widely spread and spoken language the world over (Crystal, 1997). It has also been noted that one out of five of the world's population speaks English with some degree of competence and also that 90% of all information in the world's electronic retrieval systems is stored in English language (Hasman, 2004). Crystal (1997) states that 95% of international organisations in the world use English language as their official means of transaction. Citing the Mexican Journal of Medicine as an example, Osisanwo (2005) asserts that most scientific publications around the world that stated publishing in some other languages have switched over to English language. In these days of globalisation, more and more people are seeking access to English language to be able to connect to the activities of the wider world. These underscore the extensive use of English language in various parts of the world with its attendant impact on the life of the people.
