AN INVESTIGATION INTO WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN CONSTRUCTION FIRMS -DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVES

Title: AN INVESTIGATION INTO WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN CONSTRUCTION FIRMS -DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVES
Authors: Bamgbade, Adebisi Abosede; Aka, Adefemi; Oyewobi, Lukeman; Olusegun, Bamidele Bamgbade; Garba, Yusuf
Abstract: Diversity management has gone a long way to support women in construction that are
immersed with the macho world of work environment. The aim of this research is to evaluate
the cultural diversity management in construction firms with a view to improve women
participation in construction projects. The study adopted quantitative research method for data
collection. 254 questionnaires were sent out to different construction firms, out of which only
113 (10.6%) were returned. The data obtained in the questionnaire study was analysed using
descriptives analysis, factor analysis, Chi-square, and multiple regression analysis of the
statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The results disclosed that employees values
variables of ’I feel that I can disclose my whole identity to my colleagues’ (0.894) loaded
strongly on the employees values construct. Further, among the diversity culture variables,
‘Organisation has a diversity officer or another employee with special knowledge of diversity’
(0.817) loaded as the highest variable on the diversity culture construct. On the diversity
management, ‘Internal advocate’ (0.848) was loaded as the highest among the construct. It is
therefore recommended that construction firms should develop employees’ value survey
forms to draw out information about the current state of their employees’ mindset/value.

Title: National Building Code: Challenges before the Professional Builder
Authors: Olawuyi, B.J.
Abstract: This paper reviews the new National Building Code with a view to highlight the responsibilities re-posed on the Professional Builder in line with the provisions of the Code. It presents the main practice of the Builder as Building production Management and asserts that he is directly responsible for time, quality, health and safety issues on the building site. The various documents to be developed, the procedures to be followed by a builder, the requisite qalities, related functions and obligations for effective performance were outlined and discussed. The paper concluded by stressing that "all eyes are now on the Builder and that liability for future cases of collapse of Buildings involving a Builder lies on his head. It therebycall for proper and adequate knowledge acquisition, efficient service delivery and collaborative efforts towardsenhancing good value for our clients' money.

Solar Energy as an Enhancement to Functional Requirement in Landscape Architecture

Title: Solar Energy as an Enhancement to Functional Requirement in Landscape Architecture
Authors: Olaniyan, A.O.; Olawuyi, B.J.
Abstract: A solar tree is a sculpturesque street light, comprising ten branches decorated with solar lamps, each one consisting of thirty six solar cells. Its concept typifies a holistic model that marries both form and function beneficial for aesthetics and lighting in parking lots and urnban landscapes. Often times, most landscape sculptures found in Nigeria roundabouts are aesthetically pleasing but dissociative and deficient in their functional requirements for dusk to dawn lighting. This paper comparatively evaluates the weak imitations and limitations of the former golf course roundabout in Jos, Plateau State, characterized by a circular array of convex, divergent branches and a dimly lit nucleus that is irregular in its power supply owing to its dependence on hydro electricty. The paper remodels the sculpture according to the conceptual functional principles entrenched in the design of the sculptures, because illuminating roundabouts using solar energy is more holistic and consistent due to its inehaustive source.
