Title: Economics analysis of yam production in selected local government areas of Niger State, Nigeria.
Authors: Jibrin, S.; Sallawu, H.; Bako, R. U.; Ahmed, I. I.; Kolawale, J.; Manta, I. H.
Abstract: The research details an empirical illustration of the key underlining factors that shapes yam farming and production in Shiroro and Paikoro LGA of Niger state. The demographic and institutional characteristics of the yam farmers revealed the gender dominance (87.26%) of yam production by male while an average age of 41 years was obtained among the yam farmers. The production cost structure revealed an average variable cost/ha of ₦107,094.99 and this accounted for 96.57% of total production cost in the area under study. Furthermore, the inferential statistic (Multiple regression) for determinants of yam production offered significant insight on the interaction between dependent and explanatory variables. Farm size (t= 11.07), labour (t=7.33), and cost of yam seed (t=10.69) were statistically significant at 1% probability level .Family size (t=0.47) and farming experience (t=-2.24) also emerged as key determinants of yam production in area under study at 5% probability level. Some fundamental production constraints were enumerated by respondents to include, erratic rainfall pattern, high cost of planting materials, lack of access road and poor extension service. Conclusively, on the account of our research findings we suggested specific policy action to ease the price and access to critical inputs to stimulate yam output and the enterprise profitability in the study area.

Authors: Bako, R. U.,; Mohammed, U. S.; Emejiwe, P. C.,; Akinbuwa, K. M.
Abstract: This study analyzed the effect of fuel subsidy on the poverty status of women in rural households of Abia State Nigeria. The objectives includes:to describe the socio-economic characteristics of the women, examine the income and expenditure level of the women before and after fuel subsidy removal, determine the poverty status of the women in the study area, analyze the effect of fuel subsidy removal on the poverty status of women in the study area. A total of one hundred and twenty (120) women were randomly selected and administered with structured questionnaires. Descriptive, FGT model and Logit regression were used to analyze the data collected. The result shows that 90% of the respondents were married with mean age of 43 years. (74.2%) had formal education (70%) of them were petty traders. More than half of them (56.7%) where not a member to any cooperative society. With regards to the income and expenditure levels of rural women before and after the removal of fuel subsidies. The minimum and maximum income of rural women before subsidy removal were ₦7000 and ₦100,000 respectively, with an average income of ₦62,000. After the subsidy removal, the minimum and maximum income were ₦8000 and ₦N120,000 respectively. 22.5% of rural women were considered poor before subsidy removal However, after the subsidy removal, this figure increased to 25.0%. the result of logit regression showed that fuel price, cost of electricity, cost of transportation, cost of cooking, were significant factors influencing the poverty status of women in rural households in Abia state. Finally, the major constraints were, high cost of transportation, high cost of food stuff, less means of livelihood and increase in child labour. The study recommends a review on the fuel subsidy removal to give the women access to better life.

Authors: Bako, R. U.; Sallawu, H.; Abdullahi, A.; Oseghale, A. I.; Utolor, D. I.
Abstract: The study analyzed the effect of insurgency on income of grain marketers in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to: describe the socio-economic characteristics of the respondent; identify the type of insurgence activities; determine the effect of insurgency on income of the respondents and identify the constraint faced by marketers in the study area. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select one hundred thirty two (132) marketers in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State due to the prevalence of insurgence activities in the area. Data were collected through structured questionnaire and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression model. The result showed that majority (85.6%) of the marketers were married with a mean age of 44 years and majority (79.5%) had secondary education as their highest level of qualification. The result also shows that almost all the respondent (96.2%) have experienced insurgency activity with more than half of the respondents indicated kidnaping (59.8%) and sporadic shooting (20.5%) as the highest forms of insurgency experience in the study area. However, the OLS result shows that, age positively affected income at 10% level of probability, while household size, frequency of occurrence of insurgent activity and severity of the insurgency negatively affected the income of the marketers at 10%, 1% and 5% level of probability respectively in the study area. The most pressing constraints faced by the marketers includes; high cost of crop (X=2.41), lack of access to market (X=2.27), high cost of transportation (X=2.23) and low patronage (X=2.03) ranked among the top four (4) major constraints in the study area, the study area. The study recommends improve security checks in the study area.

Title: Barriers to cooperative membership and participation in off-farm activities faced by couples and non-couples in selected states of Nigeria
Authors: Sallawu, H.; Gbadamosi, Y. O.; Adebayo, P. D.; Adama, U. J.; Ugochukwu, I. S.; Salami, S. O.; Shehu, M.; Nmadu, J. N.
Abstract: The study aimed at examining the barriers to cooperative membership and off-farm activities participation faced by couples and non-couples in selected states of Nigeria. The research question is that what are the barriers to cooperative membership and participation in off-farm activities faced by couples and non-couples in the study area. The research was conducted in six Nigerian states using structured questionnaires to collect data from 820 selected respondents, analytical techniques including descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and structural equation models were employed. On the basis of the socio-economic findings of the study, it was revealed that cooperative members, especially adult males, outnumber non-members across all states which suggest wide gender disparities. Regional variations in gender disparities in cooperative membership also exist stressing the need for inclusive policies and targeted programs for youth and elderly. Commitment, transparency, economic status, and employee efficiency are significant while inadequate infrastructure, poor communication, and limited education affecting participation are constraints. Robust cooperative institutions effectively linked to off-farm participation require improved infrastructure, access to education, corporate governance and sound financial management.
