Title: Sources of Risk and Management Strategic among Farmers in Rice Post Harvest Management in Niger State
Authors: Olowogbayi, U. J.; Jirgi, A. J.; Ojo, M.A.; Tiamiyu, S.A.
Abstract: The study examined sources of risk and management strategies among farmers in rice post-harvest management in Niger State. The research was undertaken in five Local Government areas of Niger State namely: Katcha, Lavun, Paikoro, Shiroro and Wushishi. Data obtained was achieved through questionnaires administered to 200 farmers selected through multi-stage sampling technique. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse data. The study showed that rice post-harvest management is carried out by subsistence farmers with average farm size.

Technical Efficiency and its Determinants in Yam Production in Bosso Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria

Title: Technical Efficiency and its Determinants in Yam Production in Bosso Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria
Authors: Tanko, L.; Jirgi, A. J.; Olowogbayi, J. A.
Abstract: This paper investigates farm level technical efficiency of production and its determinants in a sample of 80 yam producing farms in Bosso Local Government Area (LGA), Niger State, Nigeria using a stochastic frontier production function approach applied to cross-sectional data generated during the 2006 cropping season. Farmers were selected using random sampling procedure. Results indicate that technical efficiency of production in the sample of yam producing farms investigated ranges from a minimum of 18.60 per cent to a maximum of 92.60 per cent with an average technical efficiency estimate of 80.90 per cent. This suggests that there are prospects for increasing their production by as much as 19.10 per cent by reallocating the existing resources more optimally. Results also show that the estimated coefficients in the technical efficiency model indicate that farm size and level of personal income have positive effects on technical efficiency of yam farmers. However, a negative relationship between technical efficiency and extension contact is found. It is recommended that farmers should expand their farm sizes which necessitates the introduction and re-strengthening of existing favourable credit policies. The central body coordinating extension services should be encouraged by motivating staff directly involved in disseminating production information to increase output.

Risk Attitude of Monocrop and Intercrop Farmers in Kebbi State Nigeria

Title: Risk Attitude of Monocrop and Intercrop Farmers in Kebbi State Nigeria
Authors: jiigi, A. J.; NMADU, J. N; Grove, B.; Jordan, H.; Viljoen, M. F.
Abstract: The research investigated the risk attitude, of fanners in Kebbi State, Nigeria, with the aim of generating reliable information on the influence of risk attitudes of the decision-making behaviour of farmers. Agricultural production is highly characterized by risks for this reason, fanners' attitudes towards risk is imperative in understanding their behaviour towards the adoption of new technology and managerial decisions. The technique applied in order to achieve the objectives of the study was Experimental Gambling Approach. Data to conduct the research was obtained mainly from primary sources through a questionnaire survey of 256 farmers, comprising 98 mono croppers and 158 intercroppers. The results from the study revealed that all the fanners exhibit some level of risk aversion. The intercroppers were statistically significantly more risk-averse than the mono croppers. Risk attitude influences the decisions farmers make in the production process and should be considered when formulating agricultural policies.

An Overview of the Implications of the Global Financial Crisis on the Nigerian Banking sector

Title: An Overview of the Implications of the Global Financial Crisis on the Nigerian Banking sector
Authors: Polycarp, I.M; Jirgi, A. J.
Abstract: The global financial architecture is facing an unprecedented cataclysm since the great depression with a myriad of economic woes like bank losses, stock market crashes, declining real output and slowed economic growth, weakened financial systems typified by takeovers and bankruptcies, loss of jobs, loss of confidence in financial markets etc. The Nigerian banking sector is not completely immune to the crises, the paper therefore analyses the antecedents of the global financial crises and its implication on the Nigerian banking sector delving into the responses by government and regulatory authorities to curb the effects of the crises. For Nigeria banks to withstand the crisis, regulatory authorities should intensify surveillance and watch out for early warning signals of possible systemic distress and continuous efforts should be made to upgrade the accounting, reporting and disclosure format along the best practice models. Multilateral cooperation should also be upheld between Central Bank of Nigeria and other relevant bodies as well as imbibing sound corporate governance in banking operations by Nigerian banks.
