Educational attainment revealed that 18.9% had primary education as against 44.1% that acquired secondary education .Respondents received training in seed yam production (90.5%),Yam mini-sett technology(88.7%),and marketing system(88.3%). Preferred training needs included yam mini-sett technology storage method and seed yam production .Tobit regression result indicated that age at p<0.05 and income at p<0.10 negatively influenced training needs while farming experience at p<0.01,extension contact at p<0.01 and access to credit at p<0.10 positively and significantly influenced training needs .This study concludes that rural youth remain actively engaged in yam production but require targeted capacity development .It recommends that Government agencies , non governmental organizations (NGOs),and extension services prioritize youth -focused training programmes to increase yam production.

A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 120 farmers across the selected areas for the study. Questionnaire complemented with an interview schedule ws used to elicit primary information. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Probit regression analysis. The results of the analysis obtained showed that (81.7%) of farmers were satisfied with cooperative participation, with future income security (X̄=5.95) ranking highest among well-being indicators. Also, the Probit regression analysis revealed that improved income, improved livelihood, improved inputs/market access, education, and bargaining power positively influenced farmers' well-being at various probability levels. The model was statistically significant with Pseudo R2 of 0.4733. The study revealed that the most important constraints faced by farmers are corruption among officials (X̄=3.90), limited awareness (X̄=3.88), lack of trust among members (X̄=3.76), and lack of continuity/limited access to information (X̄=2.90), among others. Authors: Shehu, M.; Iranola, O.M.
Abstract: The study focused on assessment of the effect of maize production on small-scale farming households in Bosso L.G.ANiger State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used for the selection of 122 smallholder maize farmers for the study. A well-structured questionnaire containing both open- and closed-ended questions was used to collect the data for the study. Descriptive statistics such as percentages and frequencies and multiple regression analysis were used to achieve the objectives of the study. The findings revealed that majority (87%) of the farmers were male, 93% were married, 33.41% were between the age range of 31-40 years, 39.34% had no formal education. On factors affecting maize production, 73.77% have no access to credit, 68.03% have no access to modern farm implements, 88.53% have no access to extension services and 92.62% have no access to irrigation. On the effects of maize production on household income for four years, the result of the multiple regression analysis showed that farm size (coefficient of 0.108), experience (coefficient of 0.039), and age (coefficient of 0.013) were all statistically significant at 1% probability level (< 0.01), while access to modern implements (coefficient of 0.189) was statistically significant at 10% probability level (< 0.10). Identified challenges facing maize farmers within the study area were high cost of inputs, climate change, high interest rate, absence of training programs, and lack of access to market support. Major recommendations were to subsidize farm inputs and modern farm implements, provide a low interest rate, and allocate more land for agricultural purposes.
