Abstract: Hospital outdoor spaces (HOS) play an important role in supporting physical and mental wellbeing&#xD;
among patients and visitors. These spaces are often designed to serve as auxiliary spaces&#xD;
within the hospital environment in developed countries, while it is often ignored in&#xD;
underdeveloped countries. The study aims to identify the spatial characteristics within the&#xD;
hospital's outdoor space that optimally support users’ activities. It employed a mixed method&#xD;
using a purposive sampling technique, the studied hospitals were selected within Abuja, Nigeria&#xD;
based on their outdoor spatial characteristics. A 5-point Likert scale was used to assess the&#xD;
perception of both physical and social attributes derived from hospital outdoor spaces. A total of&#xD;
343 questionnaires were returned and analyzed for this study. The observation of human&#xD;
activities, and administering of the questionnaire were done alongside measuring microclimatic&#xD;
parameters in three phases between the hours of 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm, and&#xD;
3:00 pm – 6:00 pm for five working days of the week. The results reveal a lack of inclusiveness of&#xD;
hospital outdoor spaces in their design which makes the spaces unsuitable for the various human&#xD;
activities. It also identifies the significant relationship between spatial characteristics and user&#xD;
activities to be optimal, if such spaces are designed and located close to the various units within&#xD;
the facility. The study concludes by suggesting that policies should be implemented that make&#xD;
hospital outdoor spaces an integral part of hospital design for a more sustainable hospital&#xD;
environment.

Abstract: Outdoor thermal comfort studies have been understudied especially within the hospital settings.&#xD;
In tropical African continent which records high temperature range, poses a great challenge to&#xD;
human health, and by koppens climate classification, Abuja is within the tropical savannah&#xD;
climate. The study therefore aims at establishing the Operative Temperature (TOp) of users within&#xD;
the outdoor spaces of selected hospitals in Abuja, Nigeria. The study employed a mixed-method&#xD;
approach with field measurement of microclimatic parameter carried out in the dry seasons using&#xD;
data loggers, alongside observation of behaviors within a specified time range, 9:00 am – 12:00&#xD;
pm, 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm and 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm for each of the studied days. A closed ended&#xD;
questionnaire was employed to survey the user’s perception within the outdoor spaces. Climatic&#xD;
data from NIMET was also collected as a comparative assessment with ASHRAE standard 55.&#xD;
The study showed that, TOp exceeds the standard in the dry season having a value of 32.930C, the&#xD;
Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) index at this value indicates a warm sensation. The&#xD;
study concludes that, the design of outdoor spaces within these hospitals were not given due&#xD;
consideration which have resulted in high value of Top recorded and recommends the designing&#xD;
of outdoor spaces to be an integral part of the design stage with the inclusion of landscapes and&#xD;
covered outdoor spaces within the hospitals’ outdoor spaces.

Abstract: Ensuring  adequate  housing  quality  for  public  servants,  particularly  law  enforcement  personnel,  is  a  critical  responsibility  for  governments.  This  study  aims  to  develop  a  comprehensive  housing  quality  assessment  tool  tailored specifically  for  police  barracks  in  the  North-Central  region  of  Nigeria.  Utilizing  a  mixed-methods  approach,  the research  employs  the  Delphi  technique  to  identify  and  prioritize  critical  factors  and  criteria  for  assessing  housing quality  through  an  iterative  process  involving  an  expert  panel.  The  identified  factors  are  then  empirically  evaluated through  a  survey  administered  to  police  officers  residing  in  the  barracks.  Partial  Least  Square  (PLS)  analysis  is employed to examine the relationships between the factors and their impact on overall housing quality, ensuring the validity  and  reliability  of  the  proposed  assessment  tool.  By  integrating  expert  consensus  and  empirical  validation,  the  study contributes to the development of a context-specific and evidence-based housing quality assessment framework, addressing the unique needs and challenges of public housing provision for law enforcement personnel in the region. The  findings  have  implications  for  policymakers,  housing  authorities,  and  stakeholders  in  improving  the  living conditions  and  well-being  of  police  officers  and  their  families.</summary>

    <summary type="text">Title: Influence of Socio-cultural Factors in Solid Waste Generation in Bida Town

Abstract: Waste generation rates vary across&#xD;
countries and cities due to differences in influencing&#xD;
factors. This study assesses the socio-cultural factors&#xD;
and the relationships between socio-cultural factors&#xD;
and solid waste generation in Bida. The study&#xD;
employed a quantitative approach with a structured&#xD;
questionnaire to assess seven (7) socio-cultural&#xD;
factors: geographic location, economic situation,&#xD;
beliefs, religion, urbanization, awareness, and&#xD;
practice. A total of 400 households were sampled&#xD;
using stratified random techniques based on&#xD;
traditional and modern settings in Bida town.&#xD;
Exploratory factor analysis was employed to analyse&#xD;
the factors that influenced waste generation. The&#xD;
relationship between these factors and waste&#xD;
generation was tested using Pearson correlation and&#xD;
regression analysis. The findings show that social&#xD;
factors such as "urbanization" (α &gt; 0.894),&#xD;
"geographical location" (α &gt; 0.757), "awareness" (α &gt;&#xD;
0.719), and "economic situation" (α = 0.791) as well&#xD;
as cultural factors such as "practice" (α = 0.798),&#xD;
"belief (α = 0.782), 'religion' (α = 0.715) influences&#xD;
solid waste generation in Bida. Also, "urbanization"&#xD;
(r =.124; p =.05), "awareness" (r =.197; p =.01), and&#xD;
the cultural factor "local practice" (r =.195; p =.01)&#xD;
were found to have weak and significant associations&#xD;
with solid waste generation in Bida. However, the&#xD;
relationship between variables was moderate (R&#xD;
=.290) and accounted for only 8.4% (R² =.084) of the&#xD;
variance in the waste generation rate in Bida.</summary>
