Authors: Abdullahi, Z.; Salau, R. B.; Jude, D. C.; Bisiriyu, M. T.
Abstract: Petroleum diesel poses a lot of health hazard due to harmful gas emission. Biodiesel is a renewable substitute for petroleum diesel. Different types of low cost feedstock has been investigated by various researchers for the production of biodiesel. In this work, two step trans-esterification process was employed for the production of biodiesel using neem seed. Oil extraction was carried out using soxhlet extractor and the percentage oil yield was 45.47%. Physicochemical analysis of the oil shows that it contain 3.4% moisture, specific gravity of 0.935, viscosity of 34.39, acid value of 15.71 mg KOH/g, iodine value 7.85 mg/g and saponification value of 200.6 mgKOH/g. The maximum biodiesel yields was 85.50 % at 60 °C and 70 mins and at 6:1 oil to methanol molar ratio. Physicochemical properties of the biodiesel shows a specific gravity of 0.890, flash point of 150 °C pour point of -1 °C, kinematic viscosity of 5.2 and cloud point of 11 °C. The values were quite consistent with those of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and European Nation Standards (EN) for diesel fuel. This result shows that biodiesel produced from neem seed can be used in a conventional diesel engine without modification.

Authors: Abdullahi, Z.; Tijani, J. O.; Ajai, A. I.; Abdulkareem, A. S.
Abstract: Graphene oxide (GO) is a carbon nanomaterial with two dimensional structure having excellent electronic, &#xD;
optical, mechanical and thermal properties and finds application in biomedicine, electronic devices, energy &#xD;
storage devices, supercapacitors, biosensors and water purification. This study focused on the synthesis and &#xD;
characterisation of GO. Herein, GO was synthesised from graphite powder using the improve Hummers &#xD;
method.  Characterisation of the synthesised GO was done using Ultra Violet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, &#xD;
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), High Resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy &#xD;
Dispersive Spectroscopy (HRSEM-EDS), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. The UV-visible spectrum &#xD;
shows absorption peak at maximum wavelength of 228.5 nm. FTIR result shows the presence of functional &#xD;
groups such as O-H, C=O, C-O-C and C-O. HRSEM micrograph reveal the formation of flake-like network &#xD;
having C/O ratio of 1.41, while the XRD spectrum demonstrated the appearance of a wide diffraction peak at &#xD;
2θ value of 11.6° with crystallite size of 18.1 nm. All the characterisation results confirm the successful &#xD;
synthesis of high-purity graphene oxide which can be useful in wastewater treatment

Abstract: Rice is a staple food crop which is widely grown across the continents. This study evaluates the essential trace element contents of some locally grown varieties of rice in Nigeria. Eighteen local variety from 14 rice producing states in Nigeria were obtained from popular markets. Samples were dried, homogenized and later digested using proportionate amount of HNO3/H,O2. The concentrations of the three elements (Cu, Mn, Fe) were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The method used was validated using a certified reference. The result showed the following ranges of concentrations: Cu (1.00 ± 0.02-5.00 + 0.14), Fe (10.85 ± 0.50-38.40 ± 0.99), and Mn (1.95 ± 0.65-32. 10 + 0.24) mg/kg. The concentration of Cu, Fe and Mn in the studied local rice suggest their nutritional potentials as food for sourcing essential trace elements. The values of the essential trace elements were below the WHO permissible limit which indicates consumption safety. The rice from ldanre and Lafiagi have substantial content of Cu. Ofada and Ikirun rice are rich in Fe content. Substantial amount of Mn was found in Abakaliki and Efon-Alaaye rice. The studied local rice could play a beneficial role in management of mineral deficiency diseases.</summary>

Authors: Anyanwu, S.K; Andrew, A; Idika, P; Ndatmso, M.M
Abstract: The study was aimed to determine the physiochemical properties and heavy metal of effluent water sourced from tannery sites within Kano and Zaria metropolis. Effluent samples were taken from four different tannery sites: Kano and Zaria. Each sample was collected in plastic containers that were carefully rinsed with deionized water after being previously cleaned with detergents and 10% HNO3 acid. All of the samples were brought to the laboratory for analysis using standard methodology. The Results revealed pH (3.55-9.35), Electrical Conductivity(EC)(21410-224µs/cm), Total Suspended Solids(TSS) (2150-3546.60 mg/L) and Total Dissolved Solids(TDS) (1468-8260 mg/L) across the sites. Parameters such as EC, TSS and TDS were not in conformity with the WHO Standard except pH (9.35±3.55) for site1 from Kano metropolis. Heavy metal such as Cr (3.52-4.93 mg/L), Pb (1.35-2.7 mg/L), and Cu (1.24-1.82 mg/L) were not in tandem with WHO standard across the sampling sites except for Fe (4.64-8.32 mg/L) that conformed. The studied effluent water showed significant deviation from WHO standard and as such monitoring to treat/determine the safety level should be promoted.
